Peyote
Peyote is a small spineless cactus that grows in the Mexican desert as well as in the south west of the United States. Peyote, often referred to as Peyote Buttons because of their round button-like shape, contains the psychoactive substance mescaline. It is typically consumed raw or as a tea in a dried and pulverised form mixed with water. Some native traditions mix the powder with chocolate and/or consume the powder directly. Peyote is an endangered species and we at Vaaiga support the ethical and sustainable harvesting of this plant so that we may use it for generations to come.
ACTIVE COMPOUNDS
Peyote or Lophophora Williamsii contains more than 60 alkaloids of which mescaline or 3,4,5-Trimethoxyphenethylamine is the primary psychoactive one. Structurally it is similar to LSD and is, therefore, often used as a comparison.
HOW LONG DOES THE EFFECT LAST?
About 10-14 hours in length with the peak effects occurring after 2-4 hours after consumption. Ceremonies last around 10 hours in duration.

COMMON EFFECTS
The peyote experience is different for each person and each time it is taken. Some report mind altering, spiritual experiences whereas others report a sense of connectivity with nature and self. The psychoactive ingredient of peyote, mescaline, is similar in structure to LSD and like LSD can trigger rich auditory and visual effects. Most people experience feelings of nausea, stomach cramps and other physiological effects in the first 1-2 hours of consumption which can lead to vomiting and/or diarrhoea. Native traditions have used peyote for thousands of years for healing of physical and emotional ailments as well as connecting with the world of the spirits for guidance and support. After ceremonies, people report healings, letting go of stuck emotions, greater sense of direction and purpose amongst others.

PRECAUTIONS
Any serotonin enhancing medication is advisable not to be taken with with Peyote; this includes the vast majority of antidepressants (SSRI’s, tricyclics, MAOI’s, etc). Peyote should not be combined with alcohol or recreational substances such as marijuana for at least 24 hours before your session. Peyote should be avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding as well as for those with family history of mental illness, high blood pressure or heart conditions.
